BIU Backyard Gardener: Areanna Curley

I have always loved gardening but I never really had the time or resources to do it. I found out about Build It Up when I saw the application on Facebook. I applied because I thought “Why not? The worst they can say is no”. To my surprise a few weeks later I got an email saying my family was accepted! It’s turned out to be one of the best thing I’ve ever do!

Working in the garden has gotten all of us outside more, even my 7 month old son likes to swing while we do all of the hard work. It has also brought us closer together because it creates a time that we have to be present with each other. It’s really hard to be on Facebook while you are trying to hoe a row. The garden has become a place where we don’t see work as work but as a time to unwind and relax.

Having an abundance of fresh vegetables has encouraged us to eat better and saves money! None of us dislike any vegetable but fresh ones can be expensive. This has helped us to save money on common vegetables, like tomatoes, and we can put that money towards things we don’t get often like spaghetti squash.

We are so thankful for Build It Up and everyone that has helped make it possible. We hope to participate again next year and have a market garden. We have all found a love for gardening and being outside through this program. We hope to have a garden for many years and to help the program grow.
