Gardener Story: Liz Smith

I am so thankful for the opportunity to be a part of the “Build It Up” program. Gardening is important to our family because……. well, because we moved to a farm with zero farming experience. The nearest grocery store is about 25 minute drive so it just seems logical that we figure out how to garden effectively.

The Build It Up program has taught me so many things I did not know. When to plant what, how to space things, how to improve soil quality and why, and so much more.

I find one of the more amazing things to be the rate at which okra grow and how sneaky they are. Pulling weeds is always a challenge. I like to think of it as therapeutic. An opportunity to get your thoughts in order as you pull weeds. I was particularly thankful for guidance regarding a loofah growing endeavor. Lexy Close guided me to a trellis idea that has been very helpful. I am truly thankful for the experiences this class has brought to me and my family.
