Gardener Story: Georgia Sinko

My name is Georgia and I’ve been growing plants most of my life. From family gardens up to container gardens while getting my degrees. I’ve always loved to have something green to take care of. Right now, I live with my partner, Elliot, and our three boys on a farm in Hampton. Although I’ve always had a green thumb, I’ve never focused on educating myself in the art of growing food and instead relied on sheer luck and experience. I’m excited to increase my knowledge through Build It Up and to become a better gardener and farmer!
We built a high tunnel on our property last fall and have been experimenting with what to grow in there during the cold winter months. We have had limited success over the winter with carrots and onions, but we were able to grow lettuce, collard greens, mustard greens, arugula, and spinach. Today, I began to harden off my tomatoes for the high tunnel and planted some brussel sprouts, cauliflower, peas, Swiss chard, and more spinach. I am growing two interesting types of cauliflower: Veronica and Graffiti. Graffiti is a purple cauliflower and Veronica is a green, spiky variety. Elliot is growing some hot peppers this year as well. He has sprouted Carolina Reaper, Chocolate Bhutlah, Fish, Big Jim, and a few other varieties. I am so excited to use Build It Up to better my outdoor garden and have already planned what to put in it. I am preparing the rows and because of the size of the garden, have my work cut out for me!
